89FM: WIDESCREEN RADIO
Two speakers are better than one! At 7PM, February 22nd, 1982, Radio Active brought stereo
FM radio to Wellington!
As the second licensed FM station in Aotearoa, and the first in Wellington, RadioActive.FM is
today, New Zealand’s longest running FM broadcaster.
In 1982, FM radio provided a stereo signal with less distortion than its AM counterparts,
(something the AM Radio Windy was not too pleased for Active to point out to listeners...).
What could not be denied was that FM stereo was a better platform for music broadcast-
ing, and provided opportunities for exciting new shows, giving Wellington audiences a new
place to hear music they couldn’t find on commercial stations.
The “Sub Card” was also launched, giving listeners discounts around the city, and on-air
giveaways!
Unlike the AM licenses, which changed their frequency yearly. 89FM would be the home of
Radio Active for nearly 30 years.
