With a homemade transmitter and a broadcast console,
(Cut out of an unsuspecting flatmate’s kitchen table), the first Active “Jocks” spoke in
to their dishcloth covered microphones for the first time on August 15, 1977.
They didn’t have a license to broad-
cast the news, although that didn’t
stop one eager announcer breaking
the story of Elvis’ death five minutes
before 2ZB, and bringing in the first
complaint from the Broadcasting
Corporation, as student radio showed
itself as a refreshing alternative to the
commercial programming.
