1990’s
WORLDCLASS & WORLDWIDE
The new decade began on shaky ground. With the Students’ Association concerned
with Active’s lack of profits, 1992 saw the attempted closure of the station, and the near
eviction of Radio Active from the Union’s buildings.
Fortunately, the entrepreneurial spirit of the staff and volunteers endured, see-
ing something in the station VUWSA leadership perhaps couldn’t, the staff and DJs
coughed up to purchase Radio Active, the equipment, and the 89FM license from the
Students’ Association.
Leaving Active reliant on advertising to sustain itself, this forced the creation of some of
Wellington’s most popular events, everything from festivals, to music videos.
While no one was looking, we managed to stick around the University until ‘98, when
Active moved down the hill to join Wellington’s creative communities, broadcasting to
the region - and for the first time, worldwide - out of the “Active Towers,” 175 Victoria
Street.
